5 Reasons to Visit the Beach During Winter | The FitFilled Life

While most people think about beach vacations during the summer, many beaches can be visited year-round. In fact, there are plenty of reasons to visit the beach during the winter, including these.

You Might Enjoy It All To Yourself

With the majority of visitors coming in the summer, you might be able to enjoy the beach all to yourself, and at a minimum, avoid the big crowds. It makes for a more tranquil, romantic experience for couples, amazing photo-ops, and incredibly peaceful strolls. There’s unlikely to be loud music blaring from nearby beach houses, just the sounds of the waves and the birds.

The Beachcombing is Better

If you like beachcombing, with few crowds, you won’t have to fight for that perfect find, and there are likely to be a lot more treasures waiting to be discovered. The weather patterns that occur now, and generally from mid-fall to early spring, tend to stir up the tides for beachcombing at its best.

The Wildlife

If you’ve purchased one of the Jacksonville houses for sale, you’ll be just a 40-minute drive from Amelia Island, where even during the chillier months of the year, the temperatures frequently reach the upper 60s. The winter is also the best time for birdwatching, when indigo bunting and cedar waxwing are frequently spotted, the latter of which flock here to feast on the berries. Fort Clinch State Park is known for providing some of the best birdwatching around for many different seasonal species.

If you’re on the west coast, visiting the beach in the winter can mean the opportunity to spot migrating whales, including Cannon Beach in Oregon. The peak of the show comes between mid-December and mid-January when some 20,000 gray whales swim just offshore. Bald eagles can also be seen soaring overhead while Roosevelt elk graze in the meadows.

It’s More Affordable

With the exception of the holidays, between Christmas and New Year’s, a visit to the beach during the winter often means discounted rates on hotel rooms. Airfare is usually cheaper if you need to catch a flight to your destination too.

The Weather

If you visit a beach in the South, the weather may be ideal, even more comfortable than the hot temperatures of summer. In West Palm Beach, Florida, for example, winter is the driest season, while temperatures average between the upper 70s and low 80s, and the water is pleasantly warm year-round. You can swim or even snorkel among colorful fish, a perfect escape from colder climates. In the Pacific Northwest, visiting the beach in the winter can mean storm watching, listening to the thundering sounds, and enjoying the sights of powerful crashing waves. In between rain showers, you might find yourself out walking on the sand, capturing photos of the beams of light that stream through the clouds, casting a warm glow across the ocean. The sunsets can be amazing this time of year too, with vibrant shades of oranges, purples, and pinks.
