What to Do When You Feel Like No One Believes in You

 

What to do when you feel like no one believes in you is a topic that came up with one of my clients just recently. It’s actually a topic that comes up a lot, especially for entrepreneurs like us that like to think outside of the box.

Let’s face it, when you are on the path to greatness in ANY area of your business, career path, or life in general, I can all but guarantee you that there will be someone (or perhaps a whole herd of people) who only want to rain on your parade. These naysayers can act like a real jerk sometimes (insert your own word to use instead of jerk).

What to do when you feel like no one believes in you

My point? When you’re working towards your “next level”, certain people (even family and best friends) are just not gonna get it.

I used to think it was devastating when the people in my life couldn’t get behind my ideas or worse yet, that I felt like I couldn’t share my big ideas and sometimes crazy dreams. But, over time I’ve come to realize, their opinions are only a reflection of the way THEY are feel about themselves.

Remember, your goals and aspirations (personally or professionally) are too important to be overshadowed by someone’s opinion of how you should be “showing up”.

The lack of support that you may face might even fuel your inner critic and severely affected your confidence in your abilities.

In my own experience, I found that it became harder for me to “sell” myself to others and therefore undermined my marketing efforts. This resulted in a decrease in the number of clients in my practice. My dream of becoming a successful coach was slowly slipping out of my grip.

I reached a critical point where I decided that I had to do something about this decline so I hired a career coach. Over a span of few months during our sessions, we were intensely focused on restoring my faith in my skills and creating a plan of action to push forward with my dream. After a lot of soul searching, I gradually regained my confidence.

Here’s what this experience taught me: You have to find a way to believe in your dreams even if no one else does. Don’t ever give up because of what other people say, and always surround yourself with people who can offer you genuine support you when times get tough.

 

3 Ways To Believe In Yourself When You Feel Like No One Believes in You

 

1. Believe in the possibilities

This is where we do look to others, not for seeking their validation but to see what is possible for us.

Thousand years ago most people believed the world was flat. To believe otherwise was consider insanity. People were afraid to push their boundaries beyond their own horizons because of the fear of falling off the edge.

But there were pioneers who had utter faith that the world was round; intrepid explorers who paved the way for a new way of thinking and proved that not only the world was round but that there were new vast continents out there with riches beyond the imagination.

These pioneers are present in our own lives too. Those that show us a way. Those that allow us to believe in the possibilities.

Seek out those who have done what you want to achieve. Adopt them as your unofficial mentor. Watch how they operate in the world and allow that to shape your journey.

 

Believe you ARE capable.

Believing we can achieve something sometimes takes blind faith, even when you feel like no one believes in you. However, we ARE the sum of our experiences and so often we can draw on things we know for certain and know as truth to enable us to take those leaps of faith. This is the starting place for building belief and confidence in ourselves.

All we need to do is look to our innate talents, experiences, skills, strengths and wisdom and see how that feeds into what we are looking to achieve right now. Taking account of how far we have come and the things we have already achieved allows us to see the stepping stones in our journey.

 

Believe in what you do.

Knowing you can get the results is the final step in self-belief. Knowing is belief with certainty. Often this comes from having a track record behind us. If you’ve done it once before you know you can do it again.

So how do we develop this stage?

Practice. Practice. Practice.

Over and over again until you can dunk those basket balls without hesitation. When it comes to game night you know you’ve done it plenty of times before, it’s just a matter of visualizing and replicating.

It’s the same with anything you want to achieve. That past record gives you the confidence to show up and work your magic. And if you don’t have that past record, you create a past record by doing it. Whether it’s a sales conversation, a 100 meter sprint or asking for that opportunity. Keep going. Keep practicing, because the more you practice the better you will get and you will start believing more in yourself.
