Why You Shouldn't Use Linktree & What to do Instead | The FitFilled Life

One of the biggest problems I have with using Instagram for my business is that it only lets you link ONE link in your bio. It’s a pain to be constantly changing this link depending on what we are promoting at the time. And I don’t know about you, but as a small biz owner, I have so many goodies that I want to share that only being allotted one link just isn’t good enough. I want to give my followers options, so that’s why I’m going to tell you why you shouldn’t use Linktree and what you can use instead.

Why You Shouldn't Use Linktree & What to do Instead

What is Linktree?

You may have seen or even have asked what is Linktree on Instagram. Well, simply enough Linktree is a platform that makes it possible to add all of your different links, then add just the ONE Linktree URL into your Instagram bio (since you can only have one, remember), and when someone clicks on the URL, they will see a nice list of all of the different links you added! However, I don’t find it very appealing in looks and if you want to have the ability to customize it to fit your brand, it’s going to cost you some dough. And if you’ve spent any time with me at all, you know that I’m all about spending as little money as possible. Especially on things that I can find a work-around for.

But the idea of Linktree is simple enough, in fact, so much so that you don’t need to use it. And if you know anything about building a web page, it’s so easy to recreate it yourself and on your own website, which makes total sense, right? And even if you don’t, I’ll show you how to do it or if you’d rather you can sign-up for my What The Tech services and I’ll do it for you!

But back to why you shouldn’t use Linktree…

1. IT’S ONE STEP FURTHER FROM YOUR WEBSITE
The aim of Linktree (and all social media in general) is to get people to your website. If you’re using Linktree, you’re just adding an extra step. Instead of linking people directly to your website, you’re linking them away from Instagram to a site that isn’t yours, only to hope that it all works smoothly, that everything on this site (that you don’t control) is working, and that they click on one of the links and end up on your site eventually. That extra step is unnecessary and makes it more likely for you to have problems getting the people to your website (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve clicked on someone’s Linktree and it just hasn’t worked). The less clicks the better!

2. IT DOESN’T FIT YOUR BRAND
The first thing that I noticed when I signed up for Linktree was how UGLY it was. It’s become the norm, so nobody seems to care, but when you’re running a small biz you should KNOW how important branding is, and Linktree gives you NO options for adding your own brand style. Not even colors! Branding is important. Don’t work so hard to perfect your gorgeous, on-brand IG feed only to go and use Linktree and it’s limited choice of color combos.

Not only is it off brand visually, but you’re also doing your brand a disservice when the one link in your profile isn’t even your website URL. You want people to see your website URL and get familiar with it so they remember it and can willingly go back. You’re giving Linktree all of the credit here, and no one on Instagram probably even KNOWS what your website actually is, god forbid they may actually think Linktree.com is YOUR website name (it’s not crazy, I know people who have actually thought this!).

You can pay for a premium version of Linktree that gives you more creative freedom, but way should you need to pay for more stuff?

3. IT MIGHT NOT ALWAYS BE THERE, AND THEN WHAT?
In light of a recent Linktree website downage, this should be a lesson learned and the only point you really need to get off of Linktree, and use my method instead! I like to be in control of everything in my business, and putting all of my Instagram conversions in the hands of a company that glitches out and literally didn’t work for a couple of days last week isn’t very in control (I know sometimes it’s IGs fault, but still) I’m sure it goes down more than you even notice, too, so how many conversions do you think you could be missing out on? It’s not a risk worth taking!

OK, I’M DONE BASHING LINKTREE, BUT WHAT YOU DO INSTEAD?
First off, I have nothing against Linktree, but I think you’ll like my solution a whole lot better. It’s simple! Create your own Instagram Landing page on your own website.

This is seriously the most simple, reliable, and FREE work around, I don’t know why more people aren’t doing it and why it took me so long to do it myself!

All you need is a mobile friendly website (if you don’t have that already, talk with me about getting that sorted out ASAP!) a blank page, some buttons and a header!

This is fun too, because you can really style it however you like, it is YOUR website after all, so you have complete creative freedom here!

STEP 1
I created a new page called “Instagram”, but you can call yours whatever you like. Just remember that the URL for this page is what you will be using in your Instagram bio, so it’s important that it’s something relevant and short. Also make sure this page in the navigation menu or linked anywhere else on your site as you only want people to come to this page from the link in your Instagram bio.

STEP 2
On my new blank page I added my Instagram handle @loririddle_ at the top in the center, and then a list of buttons under that. If you’re using WordPress this is so easy, just add buttons! You could also just use regular links, but buttons look better. You can also add photos and different elements to make it more exciting! But remember simplicity is the key.

If you don’t have the option to easily add buttons or don’t like the way they look, here’s the code that you can copy and paste into your text editor. Just adjust the text and hyperlinks where necessary.

<h1 style=”text-align: center;”><a href=”http://www.instagram.com/yourprofile”>@instagram</a></h1>
<div style=”text-align: center; padding: 10px;”><form><a href=”https://thefitfilledlife.com/blogging-basics/”><input style=”width: 300px; padding: 20px; cursor: pointer; box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px; #999; -webkit-box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px #999; -moz-box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px #999; font-weight: bold; background: #f4cccc; color: #000; border-radius: 10px; border: 1px solid #999; font-size: 150%;” type=”button” value=”Put Your Text Here” /></a></form></div>
<div style=”text-align: center; padding: 10px;”><form><a href=”https://thefitfilledlife.com/blogging-basics/”><input style=”width: 300px; padding: 20px; cursor: pointer; box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px; #999; -webkit-box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px #999; -moz-box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px #999; font-weight: bold; background: #f4cccc; color: #000; border-radius: 10px; border: 1px solid #999; font-size: 150%;” type=”button” value=”Put Your Text Here” /></a></form></div>
<div style=”text-align: center; padding: 10px;”><form><a href=”https://thefitfilledlife.com/blogging-basics/”><input style=”width: 300px; padding: 20px; cursor: pointer; box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px; #999; -webkit-box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px #999; -moz-box-shadow: 6px 6px 5px #999; font-weight: bold; background: #f4cccc; color: #000; border-radius: 10px; border: 1px solid #999; font-size: 150%;” type=”button” value=”Put Your Text Here” /></a></form></div>

and it will look something like this:

@instagram

Tip: While you’re building it, remember to preview it in Mobile view so you can see what it will look like on mobile, since that’s where everyone will be viewing it.

STEP 4
Update the link in your Instagram bio to your new URL! Done!

Note: I also removed my header and footer with some code from that particular mobile page, which is totally optional! This is super simple with DIVI. If people go to that page it’s usually because I have told them to go click on one of the links. Once they do click on one of the links, they will then be redirected to another page on my website where they can access the full website + menu.

Seriously, how simple was that? Almost more simple then signing up for Linktree.
